Abstract

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a major challenge for healthcare systems and can lead to prolonged hospitalization, increased treatment costs, antimicrobial use, complications, and preventable patient harm. Effective infection prevention cannot be achieved by a single department; it requires coordinated action across clinical, sterilization, laboratory, pharmaceutical, nursing, and information-management services. A multidisciplinary collaboration involving the Medical Doctor, Sterilization Specialist, Medical Nurse, Medical Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Medical Information provides an integrated framework for preventing infections and improving patient safety throughout the healthcare journey.
The Medical Doctor provides clinical leadership by identifying infection risks, establishing diagnostic and treatment strategies, supporting appropriate antimicrobial use, and coordinating multidisciplinary infection-control decisions. The Sterilization Specialist ensures appropriate cleaning, disinfection, packaging, sterilization, storage, traceability, and distribution of reusable medical devices. Medical Nurses translate infection-prevention policies into daily clinical practice through hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, isolation precautions, device care, environmental safety, patient education, and surveillance of infection-related signs. Medical Laboratory professionals provide microbiological diagnosis, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, pathogen identification, and surveillance data that guide infection-control interventions and antimicrobial therapy. Pharmacy professionals contribute through antimicrobial stewardship, medication safety, dose optimization, review of drug interactions, and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance patterns.
Medical Information professionals provide the digital infrastructure required to collect, integrate, analyze, document, and communicate infection-related information.
