Risk Management Strategies for Improving Patient Safety in Prehospital Emergency Medical Services: A Scoping Review

Abstract
Risk management strategies play a crucial role in enhancing patient safety within prehospital emergency medical services (EMS). Given the high-stress and time-sensitive nature of prehospital care, providers must navigate a landscape fraught with potential risks, including communication breakdowns, equipment failures, and varying levels of competency among personnel. A scoping review of existing literature reveals a spectrum of strategies employed to mitigate these risks, ranging from comprehensive training programs focusing on technical skills and decision-making under pressure to the implementation of standardized protocols that streamline communication and operational procedures. Additionally, the use of technology, such as electronic patient care records and real-time data sharing, has shown promise in reducing errors and improving the level of care provided to patients during transport. Furthermore, engaging in a culture of safety is essential for fostering an environment where EMS personnel can report near misses and adverse events without fear of retribution. Findings from the scoping review indicate that continuous education and training programs, along with regular debriefings after critical incidents, are vital for reinforcing safety protocols and improving team dynamics. Collaboration with other healthcare sectors, such as hospitals and public health agencies, is also emphasized as a means to enhance overall patient safety. Finally, the integration of risk management frameworks that are evidence-based and adaptable to local contexts can lead to more effective decision-making processes, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes in the prehospital setting.
